What does it mean to have self-worth? This question can be answered in so many ways that are unique to the experiences that we have had in our lives. Whether it means knowing our value or being comfortable in our style choice, self-worth is commonly built as we grow through life. Not only is it shaped by our personal experiences and the challenges we face, but it is also influenced by the groundbreaking icons we have witnessed.
From Shirley Chisholm's bold political aspirations to Rihanna's redefining beauty standards, these icons have pushed us to embrace our power, our identity, and our pride. In honor of Black History Month, check out some of our favorite Black icons who have paved the path to self-worth throughout the decades:
1. 1970s - Angela Davis
Angela Davis, a key leader in the Black Panther Party, became a powerful force early in her life. Known for proudly wearing her afro, whether on the front lines of a march or in court fighting the system, she has always demonstrated confidence and a deep pride in her Black identity. Ms. Davis' bold stand against oppression has inspired countless individuals to embrace their own power and dignity with pride.
2. 1980s - Shirley Chisholm
Long before Kamala Harris graced the scene, Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first to run for a major party’s presidential nomination. Her bold leadership and determination broke barriers, inspiring confidence and empowerment within the Black community by showing that they, too, could challenge the standing political system and strive for leadership roles even in the face of great adversity.
3. 1990s - Toni Morrison
“Something that is loved is never lost” - Beloved (1987). Toni Morrison, one of the most celebrated authors of our time, gave voice to the Black experience with profound depth and beauty. Through works like Beloved and Song of Solomon, she highlighted the complexities of Black identity, love, and history. Ms. Morrison’s writing empowered the Black community by affirming their stories, fostering pride in their heritage, and encouraging the embrace of their cultural and personal identities.
4. 2000s - Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama, former First Lady and influential advocate, became a symbol of strength, intelligence, and grace. Through her focus on education, healthy living, and equality, she empowered the Black community to take pride in their potential and embrace leadership roles. Her authenticity and commitment to breaking barriers have inspired countless individuals, especially women and girls of color, to believe in their worth and pursue their dreams!
5. 2010s - Rihanna
Rihanna, a singer, superstar, and global icon, has used her platform to redefine beauty, success, and self-confidence. From her music to her fashion line, Savage X, to her beauty brand, Fenty Beauty, she has consistently celebrated diversity and empowered the Black community to embrace their unique identities. Rihanna’s unapologetic approach to business, style, and self-expression has inspired millions across the globe, especially women of color, to feel confident in their skin.
