Finding Connection When Disconnected: Techniques for Breaking the Loneliness Cycle

a trapped person

Humans don’t just desire social connection - we fundamentally need it. A sense of belonging is essential to psychological well-being, deeply impacting our mental and emotional health. However, there are instances when our need for belonging goes unmet, therefore, creating a gap that can feed feelings of disconnection. When this gap persists, it can cause experiences of chronic loneliness, which can have substantial effects on well-being. Continue reading to understand what loneliness is, the different types, and ways to mitigate

and support yourself through this experience.

Loneliness or Solitude: What Are You Experiencing?

The subjectivity of this experience eliminates the ability to define this concept rigidly. It can

often feel heavy and isolating, especially when we yearn for deep, meaningful connections that seem out of reach. However, while loneliness is characterized by a painful sense of disconnection, solitude can be empowering and restorative. One way to visualize solitude is standing in the calm eye of a storm - although everything around you may be in chaos, the stillness of intentionally being alone offers clarity and peace. In contrast, loneliness can feel like a song with no melody, conveying the sense that something important is missing and the difficulty of finding a connection in a tune with no rhythm.

What are some different types of loneliness?
  1. Social/Emotional Loneliness: This category is defined by individual-level experiences regarding a desire for more intimate social relationships. This could look like moving to a new city and experiencing the absence of close friends and family.

  2. Collective Loneliness: This category is defined by the lack of meaningful relationships in the context of groups (i.e., cultural identity, school, work). This could look like a friend feeling excluded from their friend group and feeling disconnected from their social circle.

  3. Situational Loneliness: The category is defined by the temporary characteristic that arises during transitional phases or from day-to-day experiences. This could look like starting a new job and adjusting to changes and new circumstances.

What are some ways to alleviate loneliness?
  1. Mindfulness/Meditation: While loneliness can feel overwhelming, mindfulness practices offer a way to gently navigate these emotions, helping you foster self-compassion and reconnect with yourself in meaningful ways. Through compassionate self-talk, intentional breath-work, and non-judgemental noticings of our internal world we can begin to create connections and find deeper meaning within ourselves.

  2. Community Service: Engaging in acts of service can be a gateway to rebuilding a sense of belonging and purpose. Through volunteering at your local animal shelters, food pantries, or group clean-up events, you can have the opportunities to meet new people, contribute to a shared cause, and foster fulfillment.

  3. Physical Movement: Intentional and functional movement can foster connection and attunement with our body. Whether it be through group classes or walks through nature, mindful movement can create protective factors supporting your emotional and physical well-being.

  4. Join Interest Groups: Interest groups are groups based on a shared passion or curiosity for a hobby. Whether it be a book club, movie club, healing circle, or joining a theatre group, a dedicated place for expression can promote social bonding and help you get more in touch with your interests!

  5. Seek Professional Support: Consulting a mental health professional can assist you in understanding the intricacies of loneliness and in creating strategies to disrupt the cycle. Mental health professionals, such as therapists or counselors, are trained to explore the underlying causes of loneliness, which may stem from a variety of factors including social isolation, personal experiences, or even biological predispositions.
